Let the people decide on Woodhouse Moor
I WISH to register my complete disagreement with any proposal that would permit barbecuing on Woodhouse Moor.
Woodhouse Moor belongs to the people of Leeds, and should be left as a natural green space, affording a pleasant arterial route, tree-lined, on the way out from Leeds.
I am appalled that the council have already balloted students on this matter, to see whether they want the facility of being able to barbecue on the moor.
As you know, if you think about it, students are a transient group here in Leeds; they do not pay council tax, water rates etc.
The residents of Leeds, on the electoral role, have an entitlement to vote on this matter.
I am informed, reliably, that the council intended to ask the opinion of every household within 800m, but even this has not been done.
Instead the council went into the university confines to ask students there. I am at a loss to understand how you can justify this as at all democratic.
The further plan of the council to sink 40 concrete slabs 60cm into the ground of Woodhouse Moor is completely against the conservation of this land.
I ask that this idea be discontinued, and that any further proposal with regard to the changing of the use of this land is directed through the normal planning procedures, whereby the people of Leeds can have their say.
I personally do not want the smell, I do not want the sight of this activity in this land, nor do I want any more council money being spent on this idea.

DUMBING DOWN OVER JADE
Am I alone in wishing that R Pearson and Cherril Cliff would suffer a severe attack of writer's cramp and apologists for Jade Goody such as C Riley will finally give up the crusade to elevate her to sainthood.
Michael Parkinson was correct in his comments that she was synonymous with the dumbed-down culture now pervading this country, although R Pearson would hold the view that is is wholly the fault of Mr and Mrs Roberts of Grantham for not remaining celibate and producing Margaret.
I realise that this makes me an insensitive swine and I shall, therefore, hang myself but not before I have employed Max Clifford as my publicist so that my demise is fully exposed to the full glare of the media and, therefore, saving the florist industry in the United Kingdom and probably the Netherlands as well.

END THE PHONE RIP-OFF
When sanity finally arrives back in this country, I hope it will be possible to pick up a phone and speak to the person that is able to deal with my query.
I pray that that will happen when the unemployed numbers are so high that the powers that be will reduce them by putting them on switchboards and will kick the call centres into oblivion.
I don't object to paying for a call but I do strongly object to listening to Brahms and Strauss etc for a long time and then being told that my call cannot be taken and to ring again later, when no doubt the same runaround performance will be repeated. An action which increases the cost of the call.
I think that amounts to qualifying high on the rip-off practices in our what was once, great country.

WHY WE CAN'T DITCH WHEELCHAIRS
Sue Lynch (Letters, April 17) is so unfair in her criticism of B. Brady and his/her proposal to encourage the frail to abandon their wheelchairs and walk, although it should be remembered this could lead to the cancellation of the Paralympics.
Sue's graphic illustration of the problems in navigating a wheelchair due to the thoughtless/selfish acts of others is totally accurate, but Brady may have a point.
After all those who have lost the use of their limbs/legs could perhaps crawl around the streets of Leeds thus allowing the healthy but insensitive of this world the simple task of stepping over whilst dismissing this inconsiderate group of malingerers.
I know of a girl who refused the use of a wheelchair for as long as was possible, but in the fullness of time was given little choice.
However I am sure some will take comfort from the fact this beautiful, kind and gentle girl not only lost the use of her legs, but a year ago her battle with cancer, a despicable disease which seems to relish removing the sufferers' quality of life almost as much as some would relish removing the wheelchair.
Is it possible that in a previous life the Brady oft told the sick to take up their bed and walk and follow his/her example and at least attempt to walk on water.
Name and address withheld
In response to B Brady's letter, it is beyond my comprehension why anyone would choose to use a wheelchair if they do not need one.
I suffer from the debilitating condition Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and can only walk 50 yards due to extreme fatigue and pain. In order to go shopping or a 'walk' around a park, I have no choice but to use a wheelchair or mobility scooter.
I do hope B Brady never suffers from an illness of disability which causes mobility problems.

REMEMBER WE WERE ROBBED
They say that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. I don't agree, I think it's funny. Just as I thought that J Penningtons letter (YEP, April 17) was amusing in the highest of order.
Of course no one is suggesting a rematch of the 1973 European Cup Winners Cup final against AC Milan with the original line ups. For a start the referee Christos Michas would not be there.
I have to say though that in the event of a rematch, I would personally bet my house on it that Leeds would win it hands down. It would make great telly.
And don't forget the last time these two teams met, Leeds won 2-1 on aggregate, by courtesy of Bowyer and Matteo.
The fact remains that Leeds United were officially robbed of winning the in Thessalonika in May of 1973 and that shouldn't be overlooked by anyone.
