'Let's talk' plea on park mess

FOLLOWING last year's mayhem on Woodhouse Moor, the council is proposing to set aside an area for barbecues on the Moor, to limit the problem, and is now seeking views on the idea.

Nothing wrong with that, you might think, except that they are holding just two consultation meetings, one in the University Students' Union and one in the bowls pavilion on the Moor, neither of them places local people would naturally go to.

And they are advertising the meetings with a poster showing an idyllic scene on the Moor under the heading 'Do you want to barbecue on Woodhouse Moor (Hyde Park)?', which is clearly targeted at students and expecting the answer 'Yes'.

Given the sensitivity of local people to last year's events on the Moor, I would have expected the council to ensure that all sections of the community had the opportunity to comment on their plans.

While encouraging as many people as possible to go to one of the planned meetings to make their views known, I would also urge the council to hold further meetings in some of the community centres and church halls in the area, and to hold them in the evenings so that people at work during the day can have a chance to comment.

The future of Woodhouse Moor is too important to be decided on the basis of this perfunctory and slanted consultation process.
