Let down over Woodhouse Moor

It would be nice at a time of disillusionment with the quality of conduct of our elected representatives at Westminster to turn for reassurance to the performance of elected representatives at local level.

Sadly, the Council's proposals for barbecues on Woodhouse Moor offer zero reassurance.

Who do 'our' councillors think they are representing? The proposed 40 concrete blocks with their adjacent waste bins would deface the Moor for all users, barbecuers and non-barbecuers and all those citizens of Leeds (you represent the whole city, councillors) who visit and use the Moor.

Friends from Thorner and Chapel Allerton, for instance, have given up their unsuccessful confrontations with the debris and disorder which characterizes the Moor in warm weather.

The concerns of those who live locally have also been contemptuously treated through a crudely formulated consultation; the majority of the 10,000 residents supposed to receive an informative mail shot are still waiting (Where did the money go? Where did the leaflets go?)

Ward councillors have not distinguished themselves in connection with this issue: apathy and ignorance seem to have prevailed over keeping a watchful brief for those who so mistakenly elected them. I despair.

Is it too much to ask our representatives to ensure that the existing by-laws prohibiting barbecues on the Moor are enforced?

I don't pay my taxes for laws to be flouted.

Ann Massa, Cliff Lane
