Get your priorities right, Leeds
WHY is Leeds, the alleged Capital of the North, breaking its neck to have an arena built?
I am sure there are more pressing things need doing in the city and suburbs which should take priority over a extravagant arena.
Let's start with building more affordable housing. This should be done by the council on its own without partnership with housing
associations. Tackle the Government on right-to-buy whereupon the properties are then sold on to landlords after a certain timescale.
The city centre is an absolute disgrace, the amount of money spent pedestrianising certain areas which are now in state of disrepair. So many building sites which have come to a stop because of the recession. Will they ever start building again?
A once thriving market which is a shadow of its former self.
Leeds City Council needs to take a good look at itself. Remedy all these faults before building an arena.

Nights at the flicks
REGARDING the letter from Simon Peters in Mallorca about great nights at the cinema (YEP, June 22), I also remember in the 1940s – I used to go to the cinema eight times every week.
I was a butcher boy and Monday and Wednesday afternoon was half-day closing. In those days there was no TV, only wireless so I went to my local cinemas, the Capital in Meanwood and the Lounge and Cottage Road in Headingley, as well as going into town.
I have been in queues which have stretched 50, 60, 70 yards long in the evenings at weekend.
The price of admission in those days was 1s 9d (9 new pence) and 2s 9d (14 new pence) for the best seats. How times have changed!

Same old beat
I WAS on my way to my workplace in Leeds the day after the European election results had been announced. I heard what initially sounded like military drums just outside the art gallery. No such thing. This was a group from the Socialist Workers Party with petitions and red flags with the word "Revolution" on them.
I stopped to try and listen to the speakers but you couldn't hear them properly because of the drummers.
I couldn't help noticing an elderly couple standing nearby. They looked at this cross-section of British society with complete bafflement.
They've probably seen and heard it all before (as I have). The election result is hardly any wonder!

Height matters
THE article on Wednesday regarding Sky Plaza stated that the height of the building was 77m. The building is in fact 104.5m tall from ground floor level to the top of the parapet wall.
I'm not sure where you got the 77m figure from, possibly the other student accommodation building by Opal which is not too far away.
