Council attacked over Moor consultation

COUN Procter (Letters, March 31) accuses me of neglecting to mention the council's plan to send questionnaires about the plans for a designated barbecue area on Woodhouse Moor to 10,000 homes near the Moor.

I failed to mention this because at the time I wrote to you (before the 20 March drop-in) I didn't know about it. It would have been helpful if the council had been clear about its plans for consultation at the outset instead of giving the impression that the drop-in sessions were all it was doing.

As for the additional drop-in session on April 2, this was clearly not part of the original plans for consulting the community and has only come about because of pressure from local residents and community organisations. As this episode serves to demonstrate, communication and community engagement are not among the council's strengths. Instead of railing at those of us who draw attention to the council's shortcomings in this area, Coun Procter would do better to try and improve the council's performance.

Martin Staniforth, Leeds

Coun Proctor may be fooling himself, or may inadvertently be being fooled by others, but he has not fooled me. I live within 400m of Woodhouse Moor, and our home has very definitely NOT received one of the alleged 10,000 questionnaires supposedly delivered to all households within twice that distance of the Moor.

In this instance I was able to get to a drop-in consultation to comment, but with a bored toddler; I therefore support Martin Staniforth's earlier suggestion that council consultations are allowed to stay open later than 6.30 or 7pm.

That way I'd be happier that the results and decisions were transparent and fair; not much to ask is it really ?
