Case for banning 'delicacy'
After reading your article 'Foie gras driven off our menus' (YEP, March 7), I think it would be useful to mention why it is that people are currently campaigning against this dish.
As some people may know, the violent truth of the industry is that at birth geese and ducks are sexed, and the female birds which don't grow so quickly are discarded immediately, either they are gassed or minced alive.
The males then go on to spend around 12 weeks, often outside, growing to a certain size before being taken to the gavage sheds where they will spend the rest of their days before slaughter. In these sheds they will be caged with no room to spread their wings, and no water to swim in. Whilst in this environment they will be force fed an unnatural diet by having a tube forced down their throats four times a day, and a mixture of corn and fat pumped into their stomachs. During this process their throats can be lacerated, the birds can then choke to death on their own blood, and it is possible for their stomachs to burst due to the food forced into their stomachs. All this so their livers can reach up to ten times their normal size.
We would like people to understand why we are campaigning against this industry, an industry that couldn't possibly exist in the UK because of welfare laws.
It is about time that restaurants (like Chino Latino in Leeds) and other shops explained their support for this brutality, and it remains our fullest intention to see this cruel dish removed from Leeds, and the rest of the North of England,

I for one won't mind foie gras being taken off the menu – force feeding ducks and geese is a horrible way to get a 'delicacy'.
I don't know why Chino Latino didn't give some reasons why they continue to support it.

I cannot understand why it is that some people would want to put animals through this sort of suffering, except of course, if it is worth it financially, or whether they think there is some prestige in going to these lengths to provide for their customers.
Either way someone ought to be doing something to stop this trade, and i'm gladdened that someone is.
