A brilliant day for the baths
WHAT an interesting article about Dr Dungavell, director of the Victorian Society heritage charity and his intention to swim 1,438 lengths in all of the country's 13 listed Victorian and Edwardian swimming baths (YEP, July 26).
I am particularly pleased that he began his swim in the wonderful Bramley Baths. I was a Labour councillor for Bramley in the 1980s and 90s. Bramley Baths was closed and derelict for many years. However local people and Coun Denise Atkinson, the late Coun Arthur Miller and myself lobbied hard to have the baths restored to their former glory and after a bit of a battle, we succeeded.
One of the highlights of my political career was that day in 1992, when we, the three local councillors, arrived in a horse and carriage and wearing Victorian garb, to officially open the newly-restored Bramley Baths.
It was a brilliant day and meant that the baths could continue to be available to local people and others from further afield.
I learnt to swim at Bramley Baths when I was a kid and I hope in another 100 years, local children will still be able to avail themselves of the facilities available in this wonderful building in Broad Lane, Bramley.
