Have your say

Behind EVERY name on the list of people waiting for an organ transplant there is the story of a family who will be hoping that the new year brings a life-saving donation.

The Yorkshire Evening Post applauds the extraordinary response to the Be a Hero campaign, which has seen 42,000 residents sign the NHS Organ Donor Register in the five months since its launch.

Dr Simon Flood, clinical lead for organ donation at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “It’s incredibly moving to see how Yorkshire have backed the Be A Hero campaign since the launch and we want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has signed up so far.

“We are starting to find that families have already heard about organ donation and know their loved one’s wishes because of the campaign. There is still some way to go.”

The campaign launched after it emerged that just 29 Leeds families consented to organ donation in 2013, contrasted against the 800 people in the county who awaited vital transplants. The campaign aims to both raise awareness of organ donation and the need for people to discuss their wishes.
