THE Prime Minister’s announcement of £40m for Yorkshire’s battered flood defences is to be welcomed, but serious questions remain over the Government’s handling of the crisis.

These additional funds will provide greater protection for the communities which have suffered so grievously, but inevitably for the people of Leeds the money is too little and too late.

And as the leader of Leeds City Council, Judith Blake, rightly points out, it is far from certain that the funding is sufficient to provide comprehensive protection from future floods.

Leeds deserves nothing less than state-of-the-art flood defences fit for the 21st century.
