A team of Army bomb disposal experts from Catterick Garrison were despatched to Otley after a builder found a World War Two smoke mortar where he was working.

Police were called to Side Copse in the town just after 11am after the builder found what he believed to be an unexploded bomb.

A small cordon was set up around the property and the road was closed as a precaution, while an ‘Explosive Ordnance Disposal’ team from Catterick, in North Yorkshire, was called to the scene.

The military experts took the device, which turned out to be a smoke mortar, to fields behind nearby Pool Road and carried out a controlled explosion just before 2pm.
