We are making giant strides

By Tony Gardner When it comes to a tall orders - they don't come any bigger. A West Yorkshire tailoring firm were faced with a giant task when asked to make a pair of trousers sent all the way from China.

They belonged to a Mr Xi Shun – the world's tallest man.

Mr Shun, who measures 7ft 8.95ins, enrolled the expert help of staff at Carl Stuart Ltd in Ossett, near Wakefield, in order to make the pants a snug fit.

The outsized pants, with an inside leg of 44ins and an outside leg of 60ins, required extra stitching and were sent to the firm via an exclusive London clothiers based on Savile Row.

Walter Grimes, owner of Carl Stuart, said: "It was amazing to see how tall the trousers were.

"I think you could definately say this was a one-off job. The trousers measure 5ft just up to the waist."

Celebrities

But making garments for the stars is nothing new for the firm, which has been running for 40 years.

Celebrities from Elton John to Mick Jagger have stepped out in their top-quality clothes.

Mr Grimes said: "We do a lot of work for celebrities. We never see them but they go into shops on Savile Row and then the orders are sent to us.

"We get some unusual orders because there aren't many made-to-measure tailors left.

"But people of unusual shapes and sizes have got to go somewhere."

The tall trousers have now been sent off ready for collection by Mr Shun, who is named in the Guinness Book of World Records for his towering height.
