Violent street robbery leads to unrelated firearm charge

A man has been charged with possessing a firearm after police attended an unrelated robbery in Ravensthorpe.

Police were called at around 5.15pm on Saturday to reports of a man who had been robbed and assaulted on Garden Terrace.

The victim, 23, was walking through a ginnel in the area when he was approached by three males and attacked.

One of the men held the victim in a headlock while he was punched and kicked.

He had a quantity of cash taken.

The men made off from the scene in the direction of Garden Crescent.

But while police were in the area, they came across man on nearby Sackville Street with whom they spoke to and arrested for a firearm offence.

The road was closed off for several hours as forensic officers combed the area.

He is not being linked to the earlier robbery of the 23-year-old.

David Leslie Smith, 61, of Victoria Street, appeared before magistrates this morning charged with possession of a firearm and carrying live rounds and has been held in custody until his next hearing at Leeds Crown Court.
