Olympic champion Paul Bennett paid a visit to his old school in Leeds where he advised students to “always try new things because you never know what you may end up achieving”.

The rowing gold medalist spoke to children across all year groups at Roundhay School, where he was a pupil ten years ago.

During the talk, students passed around his medal before watching a clip of his triumphant final race in the Men’s Coxed Eight in Rio earlier this year.

Paul, 27, who started rowing at King’s College university in London, said: “Going out there and trying new things is so important.

“I had no interest in rowing before university but I gave it a go there and eventually won an Olympic gold medal.”

Speaking afterwards of returning to his old school, Paul, who still lives in Leeds, said: “It’s a bit surreal. I’d like to think my being here has shown the pupils that someone from the school can go on to do all these things that you see on TV.

People think that things like the Olympics are out of their reach but I hope my talk has shown that anyone can go on to do great things – you’ve just got to make the choice to do them.
