A recycling plant in Beeston was engulfed in flames after a fire broke out in one of its buildings.

The first calls about the fire were made around 1.30am today and concerned the H W Martins waste management site on Parkside Lane, Beeston.

Hunslet Station were first on the scene and immediately called in another seven fire pumps - this eventually rose to 12 at the height of the fire, the smoke from which could still be seen this morning.

One firefighter from Hunslet said: “When we entered the main warehouse we saw a large bale of material on fire.”

Around two thirds of the building was involved in the fire.

A spokeswoman from H W Martins group said they had no comment.
