Some areas furthest from petrol stations are popular day-tripper spots, research showed today.
Loch Quoich in the Scottish Highlands is the most remote spot in Britain for motorists to run out of fuel, at approximately 26 miles from the nearest petrol station.
Compiled by breakdown organisation Britannia Rescue, the
fuel "blackspots" include tourist areas such as Kielder Water in Northumberland, the hamlet of Blackpool Gate in Cumbria and Derwent Reservoir in Derbyshire.
With the Llyn Brianne Reservoir in mid-Wales, all these sites are at least 12 miles away from the closest pump.
Britannia Rescue said Northumberland is the county in England with the fewest number of petrol pumps per square mile, followed by Herefordshire, Cumbria and Rutland.
The company added that nearly 700,000 drivers have experienced a breakdown over the past six months as a direct result of driving on sparse petrol, while 40% of motorists admit to "running on empty" over the last few months without knowing the location of the nearest petrol pump.
It said that more than half of all breakdown call-outs were as a result of driver fault, many involving drivers running out of petrol.
Of 2,019 drivers surveyed, 11% admitted they always ran their car with as little petrol as possible.
Also, 23% shop around for the cheapest petrol available and 22% say they drive slower in an attempt to save on fuel.
Britannia Rescue managing director Peter Horton said: "Times are really tough for drivers at the moment and the cost of filling up a tank of fuel is a significant cost to many.
"But while it may be tempting to scrimp on fuel, the reality of breaking down in a remote area is not pleasant and can be dangerous."
