The A1 was closed on Monday afternoon after a lorry was left on its side on the embankment following a crash with a car.

Officers from both West and North Yorkshire Police were called to the southbound carriageway after the incident near junction 42 for Leeds at about 2.40pm.

The lorry had toppled over after running up the grass verge next to the road.

No-one was seriously injured, but motorists were warned to expect delays.

West Yorkshire’s roads policing unit tweeted: “Severe delays A1 South at J42 Leeds. Avoid if possible.”
