With time ticking down until the July Tour de France Grand Depart from Leeds, a countdown clock has been unveiled in the city centre.
To mark 50-days-to-go until Le Tour sets off from The Headrow on July 5, a special mechanical countdown clock designed by Leeds theatre designer Barney George was revealed at the Trinity Leeds shopping centre on Friday.
The Grand Depart Mechanical Theatre creation was inspired by the mechanics of a bicycle. It is made from giant steel cogs and bespoke woodwork crafted in collaboration with the University of Leeds’ school of mechanical engineering.
The clock, which will chime and shoot confetti cannons to signal the July race, is the product of an open commission by Leeds City Council.
Designer Barney George said: “Whether it makes people wonder about design and manufacture, or inspires them to get on their bike and go for a ride I cannot wait to see people’s reactions.”
