A NEWLY-opened Leeds kebab shop which prides itself on attracting “sober people” has won a top national award.

Former restaurant manager and self-confessed kebab fan Paul Baron toured the best kebab houses in Leeds and London for inspiration before opening his ‘I am Doner’ shop on Otley Road, Headingley, nine months ago.

His attention to detail paid off on Sunday night when ‘I am Doner’ won the Just Eat Best Delivery award at the British Kebab Awards held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in London.

‘I am Doner’ was also shortlisted in the Best Newcomer Outside London and Best Takeaway Outside London categories.

Mr Baron, 33, who was formerly head chef at a restaurant in Clitheroe, Lancashire, said: “Our dream was to modernise the kebab - to make something cool whilst improving the quality.

“Traditionally you see a kebab as a bit of doner meat on pitta bread with some iceberg lettuce.

“I’m a big fan of that after a few beers, but we are not the average 4am in the morning kebab shop.

“We use a total of 120 ingredients in the five or six kebabs we make. Everything we do is home made. We have ten items of salad, feta cheese and home made sauces and high quality doner meat.

“Because of that we attract a good bunch of sober people. They are high class kebabs at an affordable price.”

Mr Baron added: “I was absolutely blown away to win the award. I was over the moon.”

Members of the public were invited to nominate their favourite kebab shops and winners were crowned after a final round of judging by the British Kebab Awards judges.
