Time is running out for people to pledge their support to help shape the city’s bid for European Capital of Culture 2023.
The deadline for applications to join the steering group is this Friday, July 31, but since the YEP’s front page article earlier this month calling for volunteers, nearly 140 requests have already been submitted to Civic Hall bosses.
The group will be responsible for pulling together the all-important bid to join the premier league of global cultural hotspots, in time for the December 2017 deadline.
As well as the steering group, expressions of interest will also be considered for a number of sub-groups which will help in the bid’s journey.
Coun Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “We’ve been absolutely thrilled with the response to our call for volunteers and in particular with the sheer diversity of people that have expressed an interest in being part of the bid.
“From the outset, our main objective has been to ensure the bid really represents what’s important to the people of Leeds and properly expresses their appetite and enthusiasm for culture. That’s why it’s so important the panels include a broad cross section of our communities and cultural organisations.”
She added: “Although the deadline for applications is almost here, there’s still time for anyone who thinks they can bring something unique to the bidding team to throw their hat in the ring.
“I’d urge anyone with a genuine passion for culture not to miss this once-in-a-generation chance to be part of something special.”
