A traveller camp has been set up in Leeds, sparking a “surprised” reaction from councillors.

Around nine caravans parked up on the picnic site at the junction of Wakefield Road and Whitehouse Lane, near Swillington and Great Preston, today.

Coun Mark Dobson (Lab, Garforth and Swillington) said: “This is the first unauthorised camp for some time in the area and, with it being the end of the season, I have to say we are surprised.”

Coun Dobson made both Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police aware of the situation. A council spokesman said it will “be taking the appropriate legal action to ensure the site is vacated as soon as possible”.

See page 16 of today’s Yorkshire Evening Post for a report on plans for a traveller camp in Hunslet.
