The mustachioed pipe-fitter, commonly seen in many Nintendo games, has had his job scrapped by the Japanese computer giant.

It comes after his developers revealed he was aged 24-25, not the middle-aged man people had come to view him as.

Super Mario’s new profile on Nintendo’s website now states Mario “does everything cool”, including tennis, baseball and car racing but there is no mention of his character being a plumber.

While Mario has never been shown to be doing any plumbing, his creaters said he was given the job as he was always underground but was officially labelled as a plumber when Luigi was

created.

According to Shigeru Miyamoto from Nintendo, the character, then named Jumpman, was “basically a carpenter” in 1981’s Donkey Kong, because the game takes place on a construction site.
