Students flooded out of Leeds flats

More than 200 terrified students at Leeds Beckett University were evacuated from their accommodation on Sunday night after water 'gushed' from the ceiling and flooded their rooms for the second time since September.

Business student Marisa Hyland described how she feared for her safety when her flat at The Plaza, near Leeds Arena, started to slowly fill up.

Marisa, 19, from Coventry, said: “All the water just started gushing from the ceiling through the lights.”

The students have been put up in hotels across the city and Marisa’s father, Mark, said he’d been told by Unite, which owns the £540 a month flats, it was unlikely they would be able to return until Monday.

Unite and Leeds Beckett University were unable to provide a comment.
