‘Smoke’ pours from Leeds bank after false security alert

Emergency services were called amid concerns of an attempted robbery as smoke poured from a bank in Leeds today.

Police and firefighters rushed to the Barclays branch on Woodhouse Lane, near Leeds University, after the alarm went off at about 11.10am.

A G4S security van – used for cash deliveries – could be seen parked outside and there were suggestions the bank had been raided.

But police confirmed it was a false alarm. The “smoke” that could be seen is emitted when an alarm is activated as a security measure.

Members of the public are being warned about about rogue websites advertising fake premium rate numbers for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' cruelty line.
