One of the city’s music venues has announced it will close with immediate affect.

The Royal Park Cellars venue, located in the basement of the Royal Park Hotel in Hyde Park, has stopped staging concerts after the brewery managing the hostelry decided to pull the plug on live music.

Steve Myles, the Royal Park Cellars manager, said: “It is with no small amount of regret that I inform you that after nearly seven years of service the Royal Park Cellars has been closed with immediate effect.

“We have been instructed by the brewery to cancel all the outstanding gigs and to remove ourselves from the premises as soon as we can.”

Mr Myles said that the venue “does not fit into the brewery’s plans” for the pub’s future and added that there was no animosity or bad blood between himself and the pub’s management.

The news comes less than a year after nearby The Well venue, a stalwart of the city’s music scene, shut its doors for good.

The Royal Park Cellars was a small venue with a capacity of around 100 but it had proved the springboard for hundreds of fledgling Leeds bands, as well as attracting touring acts from all over the world.

Mr Myles said he hoped he would be able to begin staging gigs elsewhere in the city.
