A SADISTIC boyfriend who subjected his partner to a campaign of physical and psychological abuse has been jailed for three years.
John O’Halloran, 20, dripped hot plastic on his girlfriend while she was asleep after she refused to give him a back massage.
A court heard he also gave his 17-year-old victim a split lip by firing a spring-loaded toilet roll holder at her and mocked her when she started to cry.
On another occasion he crept up behind her and rubbed shaving foam in her eyes and called her a “cry baby” when she cried in pain.
She was subjected to regular beatings over a four week period and was slapped, spat at and had cold water thrown on her. She was left with bruises to her legs and chest pains after being kicked and dragged from a bed.
O’Halloran pleaded guilty to three offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one of common assault when he appeared at Leeds Crown Court yesterday.
A judge described him as a ‘cynical sadist’ after hearing how he also has
other convictions for assaults on former partners.
The attacks happened last November when the pair moved out of her mother’s home after a dispute.
They took place at the Etap hotel in Leeds, Nowell Terrace, Harehills, and Maltings Roads, Beeston, where they moved after being placed on an emergency housing list.
Police were contacted after the girlfriend told her parents about the attacks.
Richard Reed, mitigating, said O’Halloran, now of Sheffield, had had a violent childhood. He said: “He is clearly a young man who perhaps is too immature to be embarking on any relationship.”
Mr Reed said he was attending programmes designed to control his temper and cope better in relationships.
Jailing him, Judge James Spencer told O’Halloran: “You treated your then girlfriend with cynical sadism.
“When she got upset and complained you laughed and called her a cry baby – well now, you must feel proud of yourself!”
He added: “You must pay the penalty for your violence towards her.”
