The answer - Los Angeles.

The Big Orange has been declared Leeds’ musical twin city, as data by global music streaming service Deezer reveals the cities which share music tastes to other “twin cities” around the world.

The two cities lap up The Chainsmokers as the top streamed band.

The musical ‘twin town’ phenomena was discovered by a global analysis of the top ten streaming charts in major cities across the globe, 88 in total, which found some unlikely similarities with the listening habits of pockets of regional music fans living thousands of miles away from one another:

* Sheffield’s snarling garage rockers Arctic Monkeys resonate just as strongly with Glaswegian music fans as they do in the Russian capital, Moscow, over 1,600 miles away

* Avant-garde Australian songstress Sia hits a high note from Nordic to Balearic regions, breaking into the top five list in both Helsinki and Ibiza

* Pumping out of speakers and headphones from Cape Town to the ‘Windy City’ of Chicago, over 8,500 miles away, is ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ superstar The Weeknd

Dom Wallace, one of Deezer’s Music Editors, said: “We assume that because certain cities are known for a particular genre of music, that is what everyone there is listening to, but that’s clearly not the case. It’s been interesting to see some cities really hang on to their heritage by streaming local artists over and above big global artists. These unique music tastes from all over the world each feed into our algorithm feature FLOW, which suggests music for streamers to listen to, based on their personal listening habits and those of likeminded listeners.

“It’s nice to think that streamers in Leeds could be influencing the FLOW of streamers in Los Angeles.”
