Probe after body turns up close to scene of driverless car smash

Detectives are probing how the body of a man ended up on the banks of a West Yorkshire reservoir close to where a crashed car was found two days earlier.

The accident, believed to involve a Honda Civic, occurred nearby on the east bound carriageway of the M62 at Scammonden, near Ripponden, on Wednesday.

It is understood that though the police are investigating the death of the man found at the reservoir on Friday as "unexplained", at this stage there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

At the time of the car crash officers carried out a search for the driver of the car, but were unable to locate him.

The body of the man, who is thought to come from West Yorkshire, was discovered at the side of the Scammonden Dam reservoir near to where the M62 passes over it on a flyover.

Police said later that the man had not been formally identified as yet.

A post mortem examination was being performed on Saturday.
