The official Grand Depart theme song has been performed with help from a small army of Tour Maker volunteers in Leeds.

Visitors to the Welcome to Yorkshire Tour de France Grand Depart pop-up shop on the groundfloor of the Trinity Leeds shopping centre were treated to a rendition of ‘The Road’ by the group and York singer Alistair Griffin.

The collective did another rendition of the song outside Betty’s tea room in York.

Griffin will duet with Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh for a special performance of the song during the Team Presentation at Leeds First Direct Arena on Thursday.

All 198 competing riders in Le Tour will parade through Leeds city centre as they make their way to the ceremony next week. Directed by London’s 2012 Olympic head of ceremonies Martin Green, the spectacle will showcase the riders from all 22 Tour teams and feature performers including Brighouse indie rockers Embrace and French popstar Pauline Vassuer.

Mr Green said: “We’re kicking off what is going to be an extraordinary weekend.”

The single will be released on Monday, with the Tour less than a week away from rolling into action from Leeds’ Headrow on Saturday July 5.

A Tour Maker version of the theme song has also been recorded by Griffin, which will be released on his album on July 7. Visit letour.yorkshire.com/song.
