Plans to knock down an outdated spectator stand at Wetherby Racecourse and build it anew have been approved.
The course’s 55-year-old three-storey Members’ Stand is set to be demolished and replaced with a state-of-the-art four-storey building next to the Millennium Stand. A planning panel at Leeds Civic Hall was told the existing facility was “in need of replacement”. Coun Stuart McKenna said: “That building is horrible. Let’s give this permission, get it knocked down and get it built.”
Coun Paul Wadsworth added it was “pleasing to see a company looking to put investment into one of Yorkshire’s premier venues”.
The development will include a new bar, betting shop and panoramic views of both the paddock and the racecourse.
