Leeds Rhinos and Leeds United are joining forces with the local council to launch a bid to host matches in the 2013 World Cup.

Headingley and Elland Road are being put forward as potential venues, while the city also hope to provide a training base for competing teams.

Leeds City Council executive member Adam Ogilvie said: “It would be a massive honour for Leeds to host such an exciting global sporting event.”

The partnership follows similar local authority-backed bids from the two Hull clubs and Wigan and Leigh, while Warrington, Bradford and Rochdale have also publicly expressed their desire to act as hosts.

The Leeds bid will be submitted on April 15 and the Rugby Football League are expected to announce the venues in October.
