LEEDS City Council has written off more than £11,000 in rent arrears - just one month into this financial year.

The Director of Environment and Housing agreed write off irrecoverable debts from 29 former tenants’ accounts to the sum of £11,468.85.

It is the first write-off for the financial year 2014/15, which began in April, and represents tenants from the Leeds South and South East. More than £5,000 was unrecoverable due to debtor being deceased, and almost £2,000 due to the debtor leaving the country. A report says the council undertakes “rigorous action” to recover debts, but considers writing-off debt when all recovery processes have been exhausted. Further attempts would be “uneconomical”, it adds.
