An MP is in the saddle as he prepares for a four-day bike ride to raise funds for a local homeless charity.
Leeds North East MP, Fabian Hamilton, will set off for the cycle challenge on Tuesday, July 16.
Fabian will cycle to one of Leeds’ twin cities, Dortmund, Germany, for St George’s Crypt, which works with homeless and disadvantaged people in Leeds.
The pedalling politician will arrive in Dortmund on Saturday, July 20, and will be greeted by staff of one of the city’s homeless projects, Kana Suppenkueche, and will also meet dignitaries at the City Hall.
Fabian, who has done charity bike rides in the past, said: “I have been a supporter and admirer of the Crypt’s excellent work in caring for people in great need all my time here in Leeds.
“Their work is increasingly important in these very challenging times of economic austerity.”
It is hoped that the bike ride will raise £5,000 for the Crypt.
Sainsbury’s Leeds city centre stores have helped start the fundraising by donating £500.
The Crypt’s director of PR and fundraising, Martin Patterson, said: “We are delighted that Fabian has nominated the Crypt as his chosen charity for his ride from Leeds to Dortmund.
“It is especially good as we in the city prepare next year to welcome riders from the Tour de France for Le Grand Depart.”
