Over 100 riders protest against Deliveroo in Leeds

Around 100 cyclists took to their bikes in Leeds last night to protest against takeaway app Deliveroo.

The company has come under fire for its treatment of its self-employed cycle couriers, who are not entitled to sick pay, holiday and other benefits.

The demo involved Deliveroo riders, supporters and trade union members, who claim that several local couriers were sacked after their union involvement was discovered.

The group congregated in City Square at 6pm before riding a route through the city centre that took them past restaurants and takeaways which use the delivery app service.

The protest was nicknamed the 'Roosistance' by those involved, who oppose the 'gig economy' culture that allows tech start-ups to employ people on a casual basis.
