Leeds Rhinos fans are being urged to lead the charge to support the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Feed A Family campaign.
The club is urging rugby supporters to bring tins of food to the match tonight to help boost foodbanks in Leeds this summer.
Special collection points will be in place at Headingley Carnegie Stadium from 6pm until 8pm this evening.
They will be located outside the South Stand turnstiles, outside the club shop and outside the learning centre.
The YEP launched its Feed A Family campaign last week after revealing that parents in Leeds will skip meals this summer to make sure their children don’t go to bed hungry.
Nearly 20 double decker buses worth of food have been distributed in the city since September.
There are fears more families will be forced to turn to them as they struggle to put food on the table during the six week break from school.
A spokeswoman from the club said: “The YEP launched their Feed A Family campaign last week and we are appealing to fans coming to this Friday’s game against Bradford Bulls to help our community.
“Fans could make a real difference by bringing a couple of the items to help stop underprivileged families in Leeds going without food through the summer holidays.”
The news comes as the YEP launched its own collection point to help support some of the city’s most vulnerable families over the holidays.
We are calling on readers to pledge their support and buy items off our special shopping list over the next six weeks.
Special collection points will be available to drop food off to support foodbanks in north, east, south and west Leeds.
And we are calling on businesses, charities and organisations to hold their own food collections.
