Today the Yorkshire Evening Post launches a fundraising push to reach an incredible target of £3m for Leeds’ two hospices.
In what is believed to be the longest running newspaper charity campaign in the country, the YEP’s Half and Half Appeal has been supporting St Gemma’s Hospice in Moortown and Sue Ryder Wheatfields in Headingley since 1982.
Over those years, the generosity of readers across the city - and beyond - has kept the appeal going to raise a staggering £2.8m so far.
Every day, donations large and small are sent into the YEP office in memory of loved ones cared for by the hospices.
Now, we are calling on businesses, schools and individuals to show their support and grow this Leeds fundraising legacy to a £3m target.
Through ‘Project £3m’, we have introduced new and easier ways to donate to the Appeal, to help the hospices continue their vital work.
Jeremy Clifford, editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post, said: “The generosity of our readers over so many years has been nothing less than astounding. Every day cheques and money come into our office to support the Half and Half Appeal.
“I know we are setting a tough target but wouldn’t it be great to celebrate such an important landmark in 2015. That gives us 18 months to raise another £200,000 which I know is not beyond our readers.
“Throughout the next 18 months we will be working with the two hospices to come up with some great new fundraising initiatives to help us to meet the target in a fun and creative way.”
Kerry Jackson, chief executive of St Gemma’s Hospice, said: “We are so grateful to the YEP and its readers for their support over many years. It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to be able to support both Leeds’ hospices and to be heading for the £3 million mark is a testament to the generous people in our city.
“Long may the appeal continue and thank you for helping us to continue providing expert care and support for local people.”
Helen Ankrett, head of care at of Wheatfields, said: “The team at Sue Ryder Wheatfields are really excited about the re-launch of the Half and Half Appeal. We have had amazing support from the local community which has kept the appeal going and we hope that people will continue to support their local hospices and help us to reach the £3 million mark!”
