Letter: Being PM is not a popularity contest

The “Iron Lady hate brigade” who sent so many critical letters recently all suffer from a convenient memory loss.

They seem to have forgotten the dire state of Britain when when she took over. Labour had lost all control of the country thanks to trade union leaders who wanted to run the country themselves. Britain was almost bankrupt, the basket case of Europe, and considered by many to be ungovernable.

Thatcher had some difficult decisions to make and had to sell off some of our assets to pay off the horrendous debts she had inherited.

When Tony Blair took over he inherited the healthiest economy in Europe. Two years later, thanks to spending plans set in place by John Major, the economy was in credit , the first time in years. Blair and New Labour had everything going for them.

The mishandling of foot and mouth, BSE, the petrol tanker drivers’ strike and the farcical situation of asylum seekers and immigration showed what a pathetic leader we had in charge.

Thatcher made mistakes – Poll Tax and NHS fundholding – but nothing compared with the ones Blair made.

She always stood up to the Brussels buffoons and claimed a rebate of billions of pounds for overpayment of contributions because of the unfairness of the Common Agricultural Policy. Tony Blair soon surrendered most of it though, his popularity always came first.

William Hague had it right when he said: “In 20 years in politics he has betrayed every cause he believed in, contradicted every statement he made and has breached every cause he has entered into – a lifetime of U-turns, errors and sell outs.”

Blair said he wanted to leave a legacy when he left Government.Well I hope he is proud of the £1,000,000,000,000 debt he has left us – and that does not include the bank bailout which is the same again. He admitted he set out to be popular with everyone and ended up being popular with no one: how true.
