New leisure centre to replace three pools?

Have your say

Plans to close swimming pools in Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley and replace them with a multi-million pound new leisure centre in Pontefract Park are expected to move a step closer this month.

Wakefield Council is expected to commission an independent report into whether the new facility is feasible at a cabinet meeting in Wakefield on September 22.

A report to the meeting also recommends the cabinet approves a recommendation for council officers to look into the possibility of outsourcing the management of Wakefield district’s leisure facilities.

Coun Les Shaw, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: “We know that the leisure facilities in the Five Towns are in urgent need of repair.”

Coun Shaw added: “Building a brand new facility at Pontefract Park would help us deal with this and meet the needs of the people in this part of the district.”
