MORE than 100 morris dancers from across the country are set to perform at next month’s three-day Ossett Beercart Festival.

Wakefield Morris Dancers are organising the festival for a second year.

The festival, which will raise funds for Wakefield Hospice, will be held in Ossett town centre from Friday May 29 to Monday 31.

From 10am on Saturday 30, morris dancers will pull a beer cart one-mile up the hill from Ossett Brewery on Low Mill Road to Ossett Town Hall on Market Place.

There will be morris dancing performances in the town centre on the Saturday and Sunday during the event, which is being sponsored by Ossett Brewery.

The Byram Street Brass Oompah band from Huddersfield will perform on the Friday night and fiddle player Tom McConville will provide live entertainment on the Saturday night.

John Earnshaw, of Wakefield Morris Dancers, said: “We are so pleased to be back this year. Morris dancing is such an important part of British heritage, events like this one are needed for the traditions to carry on.”
