Man dies while clearing snow

A man died while trying to clear snow outside his home, police said today.

Peter Andrews, 64, was discovered in Moulton Way, Darlington, County Durham, at 11.25am yesterday.

An ambulance crew was called but efforts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Durham Police said.

A force spokeswoman said it appeared he had died while shovelling snow.

According to the Northern Echo newspaper, Mr Andrews, who lived alone, may have slipped and banged his head.

It was possible he was clearing a path behind his property on Saturday evening and may not have been found until the following morning, the paper said.

The police spokeswoman would not speculate on the cause of the death and said a post-mortem examination would be carried out and a report prepared for the coroner.

"There were no suspicious circumstances," she added.
