Loved by Leeds United fans and feared by opposition players in equal measure, David Batty made more than 300 appearances for his hometown club across two spells.

Famously combative, ‘Batts’ was part of the midfield quartet that drove Leeds to the 1991-92 First Division title.

And, after his return to Elland Road in 1998, he was a key figure once again as United blazed a trail to the Champions League semi-finals of 2000-2001.

As writer Jon Howe put it in his book All White, Batty really was “the fans’ representative on the pitch”.
