A West Yorkshire couple have been fined more than £500 for failing to clear garden waste.

Marie Beaumont and Paul Whitford of Firthcliffe Parade, Liversedge, pleaded guilty at Dewsbury Magistrates Court to not complying with an Environmental Protection Act 1990 notice.

The council had to clear the waste and as a result the couple were issued with a £100 fixed penalty each and were taken to court when neither paid. They were each fined £150 plus a £15 victim support charge plus costs of £190 each.

A council spokesman said residents are responsible for keeping their garden free from waste or they will be prosecuted.
