Lacrosse players from Leeds University had a nasty surprise when a player seeking to retrieve a stray ball happened upon a dead body.

Emergency services were called to a stretch of the river by Staffordshire University following the discovery.

Police say they are treating the death of a man whose body was found in the River Trent as ‘unexplained’.

Ambulance and fire crews were also called to the scene and a section of the river was cordoned off. The Lacrosse match, between City of Stoke and Leeds University, was initially being played on the grass playing field but was moved onto the astro-turf after the body was discovered.
