Patriotism at its best will be on show when thousands of people rally together to celebrate St George’s Day in Morley.

The Leeds branch of the Society of St George are organising the annual weekend-long St George’s Day festival in the town on April 22 and 23.

The parade began in 2005 and is thought to be the biggest St George’s Day celebration in the country, attracting around 20,000 visitors each year. The focal point of the parade will be St George on Horseback.

The event will feature stage shows, a variety of charity stalls, raffles, falconry displays and fancy dress.

Vintage cars will also be on display during the festival.

St George is recorded in history as a Christian martyr, immortalised in the myth of St George and the Dragon.

He is thought to have been a Roman solider, who was of Syrian origin.
