MOVE over Essex – Leeds is after your crown as the king of ‘dramality’ TV.
Plans have been announced for a show set in the city that will work along the same lines as smash-hit The Only Way Is Essex.
The Only Way Is Essex – or TOWIE to its fans – has won a cult following on ITV2 with its proud-to-be-trashy mix of drama and reality television.
An on-screen message at the start of each edition tells viewers that the programme’s stars are real people but warns some situations and storylines are set up “purely for your entertainment”.
Copycat shows set in London and Newcastle – E4’s Made In Chelsea and MTV’s Geordie Shore respectively – have been launched in recent months.
And now Yorkshire’s unofficial capital is preparing to jump on the dramality bandwagon with We Are Leeds.
Loiners wanting to apply for a place on the show can attend Call Lane-based Baracoa Luxe Bar from 10.30pm on June 24 and July 1, 8 and 15.
The online publicity for the programme says its producers are aiming to find the city’s “beautiful people”.
It goes on: “If you fall into this category then you could be the STAR of the show!
“We will be filming you at work, the gym, home and at Baracoa Luxe Bar. It’s time to show us what you have Leeds.”
The YEP understands the We Are Leeds Productions company behind the project is in negotiations with a number of satellite channels who have expressed an interest in screening the programme.
It is also understood that, although the show will have some of the glitz and glamour of TOWIE, it will also aim to reflect other sides of Leeds such as its proud history and landmark buildings.
