A prolific teacher has waved goodbye to a school after 35 years of dedicated service.

Senior assistant headteacher and director of physical education and sport David Geldart retired from St Mary’s School in Menston.

Under Mr Geldart’s leadership, the school has become a highly successful Sports College, gaining international recognition for its work. He was invited by the Secretary of State to become a founder member of Sport England’s National Lottery Panel in 1995.

Following six years on the Sport England Board, he established the Bambisanani Partnership between St Mary’s and Mnyakanya School in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa, while advising on school sports to benefit the country’s 18 most deprived areas.
