MOTORISTS have been warned that a key Leeds road route will be out of action this weekend.
The A58(M) Leeds Inner Ring Road will be closed to traffic in both directions from 7pm on Friday (Feb 20) until 6am on Monday. It will also be shut over the weekend of March 7 and 8.
Leeds City Council bosses say the closures are needed so that work on the Westgate footbridge can be carried out in safety.
They also say that, where possible, the shutdowns have been timed to avoid major city centre events.
However, the second closure coincides with the visit of this year’s X Factor live tour to the First Direct Arena on March 7.
Coun Richard Lewis, the council’s executive member for transport and the economy, said: “This is essential maintenance work which cannot be delayed and must be carried out safely, leaving no alternative other than to close the road.
“We understand that it will cause traffic disruption and have done everything possible to minimise the length of time taken for this work.”
The inner ring road will be closed eastbound between the A58(M) exit slip at Wellington Street and the slip at Westgate Point for Park Lane.
It will be shut westbound between the Marsh Lane exit slip and the A58(M) junction with Wellington Street.
As previously reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, repairs are also being carried out on the Woodhouse Tunnel, which runs below the University of Leeds and Leeds General Infirmary.
