Leeds: Pile-up causes traffic chaos

A five car pile-up caused traffic chaos on a busy route into Leeds.

Police were forced to close a section of Harewood Avenue after being called to the crash at around 7.30am yesterday.

Officers said ice had built up on the road, which probably caused the smash.

Five cars – a Mini convertible, Citroen Xsara, Seat Leon, Vauxhall

Corsa and BMW – had all been involved in the collision and had blocked part of the road.

An ambulance was called to the scene but the YEP understands there were no serious injuries to any of the people in the cars.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire police told the YEP that the Seat and the BMW had sustained extensive damage in the crash and had to be recovered from the scene.

Commuters making their way into Leeds faced heavy delays as a result of the accident.

Motorists are being advised to take extra care by police.

Chief Inspector Elizabeth Belton said: "The weather conditions are likely to affect some main and minor roads and if you have to drive then please be sensible."
