It is the historic pastime that provides fun for all the family and provided the backdrop to Coen Brothers classic movie The Big Lebowski.

This week’s Yorkshire Evening Post photo essay takes us behind the scenes at the MFA Bowl at the Merrion Centre in Leeds.

For the user the practice of having your ball returned to you via the machinery is just part of the experience but as you can see from our photographs the process of making this happen is a fascinating one.

Based off of Merrion Way the historic bowling alley is a big draw for serious players and amateurs alike and offers a dining experience as well arcades and pool tables.

A competitive league also operates there with teams pitting their skills against each other on a weekly basis.
