It might sound like a barking mad idea – but a special Christmas party in Leeds will see dogs playing pass the parcel and musical chairs.

Pampered pooches and their owners are being invited to take a walkies down to Leodiensians Rugby Union Football Club in Alwoodley for the unusual celebration, organised by Animal ArkAid.

Four-legged guests will also be able to tackle an agility course and play “fetch the sausage” before wolfing down a specially-made doggy Christmas cake.

However, rumours of a possible visit from “Santa Paws” at the fundraiser on December 9 are unconfirmed.

Sara Cockerham, from the Leeds charity, said committee members had been trying to think up a new and original fundraising event that wouldn’t involve asking friends and family for sponsorship again.

She told the YEP: “We were looking for something different.

“We’ve never done it before and thought it would be brilliant, really good fun.

“Everyone there will be animal lovers and we will be raising money for local charities at the same time.”

The event will also include plenty of fun and games for humans, including a version of Play Your Cards Right, plus a raffle and tombola.

Sara, who has one dog, three cats and seven rabbits, urged people to snap up tickets before the event sells out.

She added: “Let your dogs have fun and you’re going to have a right laugh too.”

Animal ArkAid was started in 2010 and has so far raised £7,000 for a variety of local animal charities, including Camp Nibble, Bramleycavies Rescue, Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue, Hope Pastures and Leeds Cat Rescue.

December 9’s party will kick off at 12.30pm, with doggy games starting at 1pm.

The four-legged festive extravaganza is expected to end at around 3.30pm.

Tickets cost £5 for adults, £3.50 for children and £2 per dog, which includes refreshments of soup, a roll, mince pies, tea and coffee.

All proceeds will go to local animal rescue organisations.
