Leeds is one of the UK's retirement hotspots

The city came second only to Birmingham for its provision of specialist housing for the over 60s.

Leeds has 8,686 retirement properties available for rent and around 1,600 that are owner-occupied.

The report, by Inspired Villages, found that 170,728 pensioners in Yorkshire own a home that is worth at least £175,000 - the threshold needed to be able to downsize and purchase a specialist retirement property. A wealthier 32,236 householders could release more than £300,000 from the sale of their home, enabling them to purchase a luxury property in an aspirational retirement complex.

Leeds has seen an explosion in the building of specialist developments aimed at the over 50s in recent years, with many located in northern suburbs such as Roundhay, Moortown and Alwoodley.

Luxury retirement villages can boast amenities such as on-site libraries, gyms, beauty salons and extensive gardens, while many run community activities for residents.
